Another ECM title, Universal Syncopations by Miroslav Vitous with Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and Jack DeJohnette, is growing on me. The opening trio of Faith Run (DeJonette, McLaughlin, Vitous) is my favorite. DeJohnette is as good as anywhere (and he is so good in so many recordings). It's amazing how these 60s veterans are able to leave their egos and standard styles at the door, as the review says, and work together in such a unified set, that recalls their storied past but is light, humorous, and swinging.
