With respect to an earlier Language Log piece on the Great Ontology Debate, Yarden Katz has drawn my attention to an anti-Shirky posting by Drew McDermott on the www-rdf-rules mailing list. McDermott ends with a zinger: It's annoying that Shirky... [Language Log] McDermott plays the usual game of pretending that the approach being criticized is the only possible approach. The "hard problem" that he talks about is precisely the problem that Shirky spends most of his piece arguing it is not nearly as useful to solve as Semantic Web proponents claim.
