We just came back from Three Guitars: Larry Coryell, Badi Assad, John Abercrombie at World Cafe Live. They'll be on tour for the rest of the month, in Minneapolis, Chicago, DC, and NYC. If you are anywhere near, go. Just drop everything, and go. I have quite a few of John Abercrombie's recordings, and I've enjoyed Larry Coryell's, but I had never heard them live. I did not know Badi Assad. The combination is an extraordinarily intense, tight, spare but emotional unity. Assad adds scat-like vocalizations, hand, mouth, and instrument percussion, singing, to a great rhythmic wave on the guitar. Live music is good, but this was on a different plane. Wow. 10:50:28 PM ![]() |
