Has Google Won? A Librarian Says Students Have More Data Than They Know What to Do With - SCOTT CARLSON, the Chronicle [Daypop Top 40]

Filtering will be very important. As Clay Shirky said, the model today is publish, then filter. It will be important for librarians and teachers to help students find the best 'filtered' material, not just the most linked stuff. I was taught how to look through books like Index Medicus and Chemical Abstracts to find articles. Students need to be taught how to properly search on the Internet.  11:46:33 PM

"Master Key Copying Revealed" [Daypop Top 40]

Talk about retro. A computer security expert discovers a major security hole in normal lock and keys. Generating a master key that can open all the locks in a building is now almost trivial. All you need is a single key! He proved this using the tools designed to protect computers. People in the industry claim that they have known about this for 150 years but I guess they forgot to tell us. I did like the ethical discussion he had. He realized that bad guys probably knew of things like this so by publishing he put both good and bad guys on an equal footing. This is why transparency is usually needed. It is why scientists who work on things that might be used by terrorists need to publish their work. The bad guys will not be stoppped and will probably figure out a way to do it anyway. By having lots of good guys looking at it, we have a chance of figuring out how to defeat it. This is what makes science different from alchemy. we publish.  11:41:16 PM
