Speechless
. When George Bush announced that he was acceding to demands he have an independent investigation of the "intelligence failures" that led to the decision by his administration to invade Iraq on the basis of its possession of weapons of mass destruction, a f [Orcinus]

Some good links to demonstrate that this commission will be like almost every other one ever seen in Washington. It will attempt to coverup and whitewash what must not be seen. The only time have have seen this not be true was through feynman's presence on the Challenger committee. But the power of the group led him to only be a minority presence in the end. His writings on the matter are enlightening in the extreme.

[rant] This commission is as likely to get to the bottom of this matter as it is to find WMDs in Iraq. Its purpose is simply to allow Bush to answer ANY question about the political manipulation of intelligence with a standard response: "I'm sorry. I can not discuss anything that is part of an ongoing review. We will just have to wait until we read the results of the commission." The whole point of this commission, at least until the election, is to give this Adminstration cover to avoid discussing their political manipulation of intelligence so that they could mislead the American people into a war that serves only this Adminstration's political purposes[/rant]  11:23:31 PM

$1 Million!.

You just broke a million dollars in the Win Wisconsin bat!

As Nicco would say, here we go!

[Blog for America]

Well, they can still raise a lot of money quickly. I wonder what they will do with it. I hope it is more effective than what they have done recently. Wisconsin will be the moment of truth.  10:26:58 PM

Thank Howard Dean for Leading His Party Out of the Darkness... (Jon Carroll). Thank Howard Dean for Leading His Party Out of the Darkness... (Jon Carroll) [Common Dreams]

An interesting editorial and one that, in my opinion. comes close to articulating the possible historical relevance of Dean, even if he never wins another candidate. He essentially ran a 3rd party candidancy inside the democratic party. While he may not make the political machine change much, he demonstrated the vitality of the base and its responsiveness to a certain message. Three times as many people in South Carolina voted in this years Democratic primary as did in 2000. If the Democratic can continue to energize this group and really increase the number who turn out, it will be a very intersting campaign.  10:20:39 PM

8 Questions for Russert -- for George W. Bush... (David Corn). 8 Questions for Russert -- for George W. Bush... (David Corn) [Common Dreams]

WHy do I think that none of these questions will be asked by Russert? It would make compelling TV, though. Maybe they will have a 5 second delay so they can pull the plug if need be ;-)  10:12:37 PM

Kay queries White House war talk

It appears that David kay may be coming around. Check this out:
Speaking in Washington on Thursday, Mr Kay said the apparent contradiction 'raised the possibility that the intelligence community had been telling the White House one thing and the White House had been hearing something else.'

He said the issue of whether politicians manipulated data to make the case for war 'is an important question that needs to be understood.

An honorable, honest man? Unfortunately, as I understand it, the commission Bush just created will not have the ability to examine these very questions and will be limited to only examining what the intelligence comunity did, not what the politicians did. Could be as big a whitewash as the one that is roiling Britain. I am getting to like Kay's ability to change his perspective as more information comes out.  10:06:20 PM

Viral Politics on Our Money

I was waiting to pay a bill today, while the person in front of me was getting his change. He got something that stopped him in his tracks. Something that he showed all of us, getting a huge reaction. He got a bill (I'm not sure if it was a $5, a $10 or a $20 one) which had stamped on it, in bright red letters, "BUSH LIED."

What a interesting idea. Everyone has to use money. What do you do with a bill that says something like this? It seems to me that whether you are for Bush or against him, you would do the same thing - Get the bill back into ciruclation as soon as possible. Those against Bush would want the viral message to move as rapidly as possible. Those for Bush would have two things they could do. Get rid of the bill ASAP, essentially doing the same thing. Spreading the message around a lot. Or they could just hold onto the money and remove it from circulation? Very hard to do but that could lead to an interesting proposition. If there are enough of these bills around and the removal from circulation gets large enough, what effect would this have on the economy?

All of us at the register today thought the idea of putting political speech on money a very unique approach. I wonder if there is some federal law against this but it sure seems like something hard to prove. I'd love to see what would happen if thousands or millions of these showed up.   9:56:19 PM
