Abusing Secrets

Based on a review of all-source reporting over the last five months, we believe that UBL [Usama bin Laden] will launch a significant terrorist attack against U.S. and/or Israeli interests in the coming weeks. The attack will be spectacular and designed to inflict mass casualties against U.S. facilities or interests. Attack preparations have been made. Attack will occur with little or no warning.

[from Abusing Secrets by David Corn]QB"

If you knew that senior government officials, including the President, read this in a briefing in July 2001, 2 month before 9/11, would it change your views? This is from the interim report of the 9/11 committee and seems to be pretty specific. Attack preparations HAVE been made. Attack WILL occur with little or no warning. Why are we only harping on the August 6 PDB? What about all the other warnings from that summer? What did they do about any of them? What is very telling is that apparently it does not hurt national security for us to know about THIS briefing but it would hamr national security for us to know who had seen it. Think about that. The information in this briefing will not help our enemies but knowing if the President saw it will help them. Sounds like CYA time to me.

We were not allowed to see the August 6 PDB for almost 3 years because of national security reasons. But as soon as it became politically expedient to release it, they did. How many times is national security going to be twisted for purely politcal reasons by this Administration? Remember, they outed an undercover CIA operative working in the area of WMD just to make a political point. I am sure that we will be hearing about this sometime in the near future.  comment []4:21:15 PM

The Stock Market.

I get asked all the time to write a book about business and my approach to it. I’m not ready to take that leap yet, but along the way, when I find a book that really impresses me, I try to help it find an audience. In this case, it wasn’t long ago I read my now favorite book about the stock market called The Number by Alex Berenson. I liked it so much, I volunteered to write the forward for the paperback edition which comes out this week.

Here is the foreward I wrote for The Number. I recommend that anyone with an interest in the market jump at the chance to buy it.
