I am going to say some things that I am sure will offend some intelligent, smart, good people. So, if this offends you, do not read further. Anyone who answers the question, "Did God create humans in their present form?" in the affirmative is an idiot. You are willfully ignorant about scientific areas in which your knowledge is worse than incorrect. If you try to force our children to listen to your religious beliefs under the guise of science, you are substituting fantasy for reality.
If there is anything to show that the Marching Morons (you'll have to read the story by Kornbluth to really understand) are gaining, this is it. A poll shows that 67% of the people who voted for Bush believe that God created humans in their present form (and 47% of Kerry's). Look, as a biologist I just have to say that these people are very poorly educated at best and idiots at worst. If I said that 67% of the people who voted for Bush and 47% of those that voted for Kerry believe the Earth is flat, what would you say? They were either ignorant or stupid. Refusing to believe in scientific fact and the scientific method because they do not conform to your religious beliefs is a losing proposition.
Evolution is a fact and has been observed by human beings. Natural selection and common descent are attempts to describe how evolution might have produced the life we see around us. The ideas of Darwin have been predictive and have been corroborated by techniques and data unknown to him, in fields as diverse as geology, paleontology and molecular biology. Perhaps only Einstein's Theories of Relativity have been examined and validated as often.
BUT Evolution is NOT a theory of origins. It says nothing about how life started and is really not concerned with how it got started. (In contrast, creationism, as its name states, is ONLY concerned with origins. All life originated from the creation by an Intelligent Designer named God.) Evolution does demonstrate that WHEN life got started was several hundred million years ago. It began with simple organisms. Too much data from multiple sources are available for anyone of the reality-based community to see differently. There is absolutely no evidence in any shape or form to indicate that man was created in his present form. Yet a majority of Americans believe otherwise. Is there any other data that so perfectly demonstrates how poorly our education system is doing?
And 45% of Bush voters, along with 24% of Kerry, actually want to replace what little teaching of evolution we do have by creationism. These are truly the ignorant idiots of our country (and I am sorry if anyone is offended but tough. If anyone wanted to replace classes on aeronautics with ones that stated angels held up the planes, they would be called idiots also), who wish to replace something with scientific rigor with religious beliefs. The contortions creationists go through are very similar to previous attempts to ignore truth. Religious idiots attempted to maintain the religious view that the Earth was the center of everything, in direct contradiction of the facts. People were harassed or killed because others believed that the Sun moved and the Earth did not. We see the same idiocy today.
Not believing in evolution is like not believing in gravity. If you have a mind that can reason, and an interest in examining reality rather than fairy tales, you know the fact of it. I happen to BELIEVE that God did not provide us with all the facts of his plan, that he reveals more of it as we begin to understand more of the world around us. The incredible richness of life on this Earth, its simplicity and complexity, are truly wondrous. And, at heart, I believe He was there at the beginning as He will be there at the end.
But, if I had to chose between evolution which I can see, which can explain so much about life around us, and my belief in God, I must chose evolution. The world is the world. Beliefs can change. Once beliefs said the Earth stood still and the Sun moved (The Bible even mentions this.) Beliefs can not change facts no matter how much people wish they did. After 400 years, we can now say that anyone who states the Earth is the center of the Solar system, or that it is flat, is easily called an idiot. While science moves forward, adding to our understanding of the world around us, I hope it does not take another 400 years for Americans to see the truth.
With our current knowledge, evolution and its attendant processes are the only scientific explanations for the abundance of life around us. Anything else is, at this point in time, a fantasy. No matter how hard you clap for that fairy, you will not make it real. Forcing our children to only learn fantasy instead of facts will only serve to weaken our country's abilities and hamper our innovation. Why are we still fighting these same battles as we have, and only here in America? Why do idiots want to keep Americans dumb? Well, I guess stupidity makes it much easier for the politicians to control the masses. If people are kept ignorant, making decisions based on their beliefs rather than rational thought, perhaps a small group of people could control everything. Perhaps it makes it much easier for elite cabals to control things. Sometimes, like now, I think Kornbluth was onto something. In the 'Marching Morons', the idiots got sent off to Venus. I wonder where our elite cabal wants to send Americans?
UPDATE: Seems the basic premise of 'The Marching Morons' can now be found in an upcoming movie, although this one will probably not be as dystopian as Kornbluth's. 10:42:12 PM
