In my post the other day about how simply washing your
hands can prevent a lot of disease transmission, a scary number of
people felt the need to leave comments proudly proclaiming how they
don't wash their hands after using the bathroom, and how they don't get
sick.

While
disregarding evolution only makes one an idiot, denying the benefits of
hand washing makes one a potential killer. But so many people live by
anecdote.
A simple example - Puerperal Fever. This often killed women shortly after giving birth. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. wrote about the possible effect of clean hands on this killer of women. He was met with ridicule.
