I don't remember if I ever purchased anything from the Apple store -- maybe one of the OS X releases. But they impressed the hell out of me the other day, and gave me one of my only bright spots in a weekend that witnessed the loss of my beloved bike.

On Friday morning, I looked on the Special Deals page on the store for an iPod. With my new, hour-long commute, and the desire to listen to some podcasts, etc. while at work, I wanted an iPod, but they are too expensive for me. On the Special Deals page, though, the other day, I spotted a 4GB iPod Mini for $149, which wasn't bad. Friday was payday, so I put in the order. They said they'd ship it in 1-2 days, and not being in a special hurry, I ordered the free shipping, which was supposed to take up to 5 days.

On Saturday morning, I found an email from the night before saying the order had been shipped Friday afternoon. Quick work! The email included a Fed Ex tracking number, so just to see what was up, I went to Fed Ex's site and plugged it in. I found that it had gone out Friday, and was already on the truck on the way to my house for delivery. I figured there was something wrong, and though I got excited, wouldn't have been surprised to not get it until Monday; I hadn't paid for Saturday delivery.

Nevertheless, along about 4, when I was in the midst of brewing a batch of Berry Beer (which I screwed up, but which will still be good), the knock came on the door, and there's my iPod. So, about 27 hours after I had ordered the thing, I had it.

Nice job, Apple online store! Of course, it helps when you're less than 100 miles from Apple, but I still give them props for shipping it within hours of my order. I like the iPod so far, and next time I buy a Mac I'll probably look at this Special Deals page again.

Via a post on the Dylanpool is this fascinating discussion of Louis' Armstrong's "St. James Infirmary." Good reading. No mention in the piece about Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell," which refers to it, and is one of Dylan's masterpieces. Reading through this piece, it's not hard to be struck by how much Dylan has used the Unfortunate Rake theme in his work..
