If we don%u2019t know history, then we are ready meat for carnivorous politicians and the intellectuals and journalists who supply the carving knives. I am not speaking of the history we learned in school, a history subservient to our political leaders, from the much-admired Founding Fathers to the Presidents of recent years. I mean a history which is honest about the past. If we don%u2019t know that history, then any President can stand up to the battery of microphones, declare that we must go to war, and we will have no basis for challenging him. He will say that the nation is in danger, that democracy and liberty are at stake, and that we must therefore send ships and planes to destroy our new enemy, and we will have no reason to disbelieve him.

Satanists issued a broad apology today for falling behind on their Doomsday predictions for June 6, 2006, a date that will be written as 6/6/6 on many calendars. Satanist leader, Evil Lord Scott Williams, issued the apology amid rumors that the date had been forgotten by Satanist goups altogether.
“We know it’s coming,” stated Williams, “we just really got behind with the whole millenium prediction in 1999, the Pat Buchanan campaign in 2000, and of course, the stock market collapse.” the Evil Lord states. “The downside of that last part, which we didn’t really think through or see coming, was that our funding just dried up.”

They steal it!
Fresh off the revalations that Ricky "The Dog Whisperer" Santorum lived off the largess of his charity, comes this information of how well Tom DeLay and his minions lived off of theirs -- with an extra bit of help from who else but Jack Abramoff.
A top adviser to former House Whip Tom DeLay received more than a third of all the money collected by the U.S. Family Network, a nonprofit organization the adviser created to promote a pro-family political agenda in Congress, according to the group's accounting records.
DeLay's former chief of staff, Edwin A. Buckham, who helped create the group while still in DeLay's employ, and his wife, Wendy, were the principal beneficiaries of the group's $3.02 million in revenue, collecting payments totaling $1,022,729 during a five-year period ending in 2001, public and private records show.
The group's revenue was drawn mostly from clients of Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to its records. From an FBI subpoena for the records, it can be inferred that the bureau is exploring whether there were links between the payments and favorable legislative treatment of Abramoff's clients by DeLay's office...
...During this latter period, Buckham and his wife, Wendy, acting through their consulting firm, made monthly payments averaging $3,200-$3,400 apiece to DeLay's wife, Christine, for three of the years in which he collected money from the USFN and some other clients.
So many laws to break in so little time.
And finally, the kicker. This group was involved in exploiting the Mariannas Islands as well. Including the now infamous (but not infamous enough) toast by DeLay towards Abramoff. But it has one additional item I had not known, and it is quite befitting Tom DeLay and the GOP:
It was at this dinner that DeLay gave the speech in which he called Abramoff "one of my closest and dearest friends," according to a copy. DeLay also reminded Tan and his colleagues of his earlier promise that no wage and immigration legislation would be passed.
"Stand firm," DeLay said in his closing. "Resist evil. Remember that all truth and blessings emanate from our Creator." He then departed with Tan to see a cockfight, according to a written account by one of the trip participants.
What a man.

Investigators: Launch put public at risk, Orlando Sentinel "Everything appeared normal June 5, 2002, as shuttle Endeavour thundered to orbit from Kennedy Space Center through hazy afternoon skies. Unknown to the public, however, the Air Force's top two safety officials at Cape Canaveral had tried to stop the countdown. Air Force technicians could not verify that a critical backup system used to destroy errant rockets was working properly. In an apparently unprecedented move, the safety officers were overruled after a phone conversation between Brig. Gen. Donald Pettit, commander of the Air Force's 45th Space Wing, and KSC Director Roy Bridges. Endeavour launched minutes later in violation of flight rules designed to protect the public."

Kathleen McFarland's delusions of grandeur.
"Hillary Clinton is really worried about me, and is so worried, in fact, that she had helicopters flying over my house in Southampton today taking pictures," said McFarland as related to the Post by "a prominent GOP activist who was at the events."

Steven Levy writes about a bunch of Web 2.0 sites in this week, including Flickr and the project I've been on for the last 6 months, Dabble We're not quite ready to roll yet; not too far away, I hope, but just not quite there yet.
