The Stench of Moral Rot [The Light of Reason]

Arthur Silbur comments on yesterday's Los Angeles Times story about intelligence agencies "investigating" whether all the false information about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction were planted by Saddam Hussein.

One of the things he says is exactly what I thought of as soon as I read the article:

So I more than half suspect that this latest LA Times story is yet another trial balloon: "Hey, we really did believe Iraq had WMDs! We thought Iraq really was a threat! We wuz fooled -- just like you." If I'm right, I think the administration may seriously mistake the degree of calm with which Americans will view the spectacle of our government -- and our hugely expensive security and intelligence operations -- being so easily taken in.

My second thought was that the Crusaders are getting desperate if they expect us to believe such obvious nonsense. So Saddam tricked us into invading his country, throwing him out of power, and killing his sons? Could anyone be stupid enough to buy that?

If, by some chance, this isn't just another Crusader lie, and US intelligence really was fooled by Iraqi defectors, then Ahmad Chalabi is infinitely more likely to be responsible than Saddam Hussein. As the Times story says, "Chalabi, who now sits on the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council in Baghdad, has said his group provided the Defense Intelligence Agency with three defectors who had personal knowledge of Hussein's illicit weapons programs."

I certainly wouldn't put it past Chalabi produce bogus intelligence, either on his own or at the request of his neocon friends. As the Pentagon's favorite to become puppet dictator of Iraq, he had a great deal to gain by doing so.
