Newsweek: Retract...Or Else!!. So says the establishment who lied about Jessica Lynch and covered up Pat Tillman being killed by friendly fire.

The Koran was never flushed down the toliet at Guantanamo because a Newsweek source who had no comment initially now says he's no longer sure. Interesting that this uncertainty now follows an international firestorm, riots, and deaths.

Meanwhile, the White House's Scott McClellan sniffs that because of Newsweek "[t]he image of the United States abroad has been damaged." You know, the Newsweek that invaded Iraq looking for WMD, and tortured prisoners at Abu Ghraib. Right Scotty. It's ALL Newsweek's fault. By Dale Steinreich. [LewRockwell.com Blog]

Note also that the Newsweek story is true, and is actually old news that has been widely reported outside the US.

As for the Iraqi Information Minister White House Press Secretary's comments about damaging the image of the United States abroad, I can only hope that foreigners, unlike Mr. McClellan, are aware that the United States and its government are not the same thing.

From lizmichael:
Rest in Peace, United States of America
Born, July 4, 1776 - Assassinated May 10, 2005

Yesterday, May 10, 2005, a virtual declaration of war was issued against the American people with the unanimous Senate passage of the Real ID act.

I am going to take some time to prepare my remarks, which shall consist of two separate articles, one expressing my feelings about the events of the day, and two, a declaration that the union between the several states commonly known as the United States of America, is, by this act, effectively dissolved, and that we prepare the formation forthwith of new governments, under whichever constitution, new or historical, it seems most appropriate to form.

While "shooting the bastards" has absolutely been placed in play now, I do not wish the American people to engage in a random "shooting of the bastards" for its own sake. Rather, we do what free people do: we form a government, we reject all current tyrannical governments, and we back that up with force if necessary.

[End the War on Freedom]

I agree with the basic idea, but I think that when forming a new government, it would be best not to use the name of a country that was conquered by the United States of America 140 years ago. It's really not a very good precedent.

RAF Hercules downed by AA fire in Iraq. The Telegraph is reporting that the RAF Hercules which crashed January 30, 2005 - the day of the Iraqi elections - was downed by an AA weapon. An interim Ministry of Defence report has ruled out almost everything apart from enemy fire and it was suggested that a missile or rocket-propelled grenade could have brought down the aircraft.

But an official told The Daily Telegraph yesterday that the report concluded that the Hercules had been shot down by anti-aircraft artillery, as it flew at... [Antiwar.com Blog]

"It was shredded by a multi-barrelled 20mm canon," the official said. "They have worked out that's what caused the crash."

The gun is believed to have been a 1960s twin-barrel Zu-23, made in China or the Soviet Union, left over from the Saddam Hussein regime.

I don't know how the rebels pulled it off, but that's a pretty impressive ambush.

VersaLaser.

For those times when cutting with an Xacto knife, Dremel tool, or electric engraver just won't do, here's a great alternative; VersaLaser. It's a real industrial laser that fits on your desktop & hooks up to a PC. It will cut, scribe or etch wood, thin metal, fabric, rubber, glass, etc... either imported from files from most any graphics app or drawn in the software that comes with it. (How long do you suppose it will be before some bozo figures out how to bypass the interlocks on the thing and sticks his hand inside to get etched?)

Prices start at about $8,000 for a 16" x 12" unit with a 10 watt laser, which puts it in reach of specialty shops that can market custom one-off cutouts to hobbyists. There are also larger models available (with larger price tags) and lots of optional accessories. This would've been perfect for at least a half-dozen projects from the last few months. Maybe one day the price will be within reach of even cheapskates like me!

Of course I'd probably have to buy a blasted Winders machine to make it go, but thinking of cutting that PC into tiny pieces with the laser once Mac drivers were released just gives me goosebumps!

[Gadgetopia]

Interesting idea. A heavy-duty version of this would seem ideal for home weaponsmithing.
