XYZFind Acquired by Interwoven

Interwoven has acquired native XML database maker XYZFind. It appears they're going to simply integrate their technology into existing Interwoven products rather then offer a stand alone database. I suspect we'll be seeing a bit more of this in the coming months.

Software AG in Pain

Software AG Cuts Workforce in Bid to Stay in Profit. Handelsblatt Apr 24 2002 7:09PM ET [Moreover - Database industry news]

This isn't a good sign for the leader in native XML databases. They're barely showing any growth in sales for Tamino (2.6M euros vs 2.3M one year ago) and it represents a minuscule part of their overall revenue (116.4M euros). As I wrote earlier the addition of native XML facilities to the big relational databases just doesn't bode well for companies targeting the enterprise space like Software AG.

Software AG was even in a somewhat luxurious position compared to most native vendors. They have established customers and a pre-existing sales force. Unfortunately for them, their strength is in the mainframe market. Not a space known for taking risks on new technology like native XML databases.

Database Future Debated

A panel discussion was held Tuesday at the Software Development Conference & Expo to discuss the future of databases. Apparently much of the discussion revolved around XML and how it will affect the database market in the future.

Infoworld has an article online and Ron Bourret also posted his notes on the XML-DEV mailing list. Definitely an interesting read.

Oracle XML DB

Oracle has posted some more technical details about the XML DB features that are coming in Oracle 9i release 2.

This looks to be a very solid improvement over their previous offerings and will likely move them into the lead for offering the best XML support in a relational database. Prior to this I think Microsoft held that honor.

This new XML support in Oracle also looks to me like the first real alternative in the RDBMS space for natively storing XML data. This doesn't bode well for those native XML databases that are trying to break into the enterprise data market. Nobody is going to pay $50,000 for an immature native XML database, when they can store XML natively in the Oracle server that they already own and trust.

Print Magazines

A couple magazines have short blurbs about Xindice this month. XML Magazine has an article about XML databases that mentions Xindice and Kurt Ward discovered that Software Development magazine has a short article titled "That Old Black Magic" that introduces Xindice.

Waking Up

Wow, has it been a long time since I've posted anything. I guess you could say I've been a bit distracted. Time for some new updates.
