In his status report on .Net at the O'Reilly Open Source Conference Steve Anglin suggests that Microsoft might use the FreeBSD kernel for a future version of Windows.

Additionally, I still think it's possible that Windows .NET Server will be redesigned so that it's built on a FreeBSD kernel sometime in 2004. Why? Because Microsoft sees the success of Apple's Mac OS X, and would like to emulate it in order to achieve some success in expanding its developer pool to even the open source community.
Now, that would be a real jaw dropper. Boy would I love to see it, but I think Steve might need to lay off the funny cigarettes. Sure is an interesting idea though. So I wonder even if they went that far, would anyone ever trust them again?
