Social Networking
I couldn't get into the sold out Stanford/MIT Vlab event on Social Networking tonight.  I took a peak inside, and saw some bloggers like Marc Cantor in the audience, and Andrew Anker of August Capital, who writes on the VentureBlog, was on the panel, so I trust that the event will be well covered in these and other blogs soon shortly :).   afterward: it was :) covered by both blogs I mention above.  Ross Mayfield of Social Text also has a post.

Glove Girl
I found a few blogs pointing to this month's Harvard Business Review article (which I read in the complimentary HBR magazine on the plane coming back from Japan today) called "A Blogger in their Midst".  The case study describes the case of a sales employee, named Glove Girl, that seemingly uses a blog to help move product, bring a dimension of humanity into the marketing effort, and in the end helps to land a major deal.  The piece brings to light many of the benefits and concerns regarding employees mixing professional and personal information in their blogs.

A trip to Japan
I just returned from a few weeks vacation in Japan.

  • Best treat: staying at the Okura Hotel in Tokyo for less than $200 US.  The economy remains in a slump in Japan, and there are many deals to be had.  The Okura is a remarkable old fashioned place.  Sort of a Japan meets Frank Lloyd Wright feel about the place.  Huge rooms (try South wing). Or go for the Imperial Penthouse ($5K per night).  We scored a private tour of this and the presidential penthouse while we were there.  The presidential penthouse even has a dance floor.
  • Best food: Of course, the Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima
  • Biggest disappointment: They closed all the Peet's Coffee shops in Tokyo.  I wish I had read that article before I made my way to each of the 2 now gone Peet's shops.  You can guess where I went first when I returned to California today.  On the other hand Starb_cks is all over the place in Tokyo and Hiroshima.  Too bad their coffee seems to put me to sleep here and in Japan.

Wow. It seems I haven't posted in quite sometime.  I've been a bit busy at work over the past few months with JobFlash.  Lots of fun, and like any startup, a lot of work.  I'm their director of product management.

Basically, we're bringing new efficiencies to the processes of screening and hiring hourly workers.  Efficiencies are being realized on both the hiring end and the job seeker's end.  We use voice and web technology to make it all happen.  It's a wonderful collaboration of technologies and comes down to the use of the simple telephone to bring the power of the network to those of us in the workforce that are not generally on the web.  The IKEA in East Palo Alto used our service to help staff their entire new store.
