AT&T Broadband screws customers
In the first deal of its kind, AT&T Broadband announced a partnership with Linksys last week to offer home networking gear as part of its US$45-per-month cable service. AT&T Broadband customers choose from among designated Linksys wired and wireless gear offered at its site, then pay AT&T Broadband $4.95 per month to network two computers and an additional $4.95 per month for each additional PC [MacCentral]

...this sucks! Why should I have to pay for something that I already have. It works, and it has worked since I set it up 18 months ago. Instead I get to pay for lousy service and line ATT's pockets for something that has worked for free. Most of the time I have two machines on the home network, sometimes three machines. So I have to pay at least $10 and possibly &15 more per month. Of course what choice do I have? QWorst has gone and forced all of their customers to use M$N. Last time I checked though I had no choice -- no DSL at my house. Ahhh, the joy of Monopoly!...mj

Tech Downturn Doesn't Slow H-1B Visas
U.S. demand for visas to hire skilled foreign workers rose last year despite an economic downturn that prompted companies in various industries to lay off more than 1 million workers.

U.S. companies and other groups applied for 342,035 H-1B work visas in 2001, up 14 percent from 2000...[Seattle Post-Intelligencer]

...there is something really messed up going on here...mj

No Surprise...N2H2 Sucks!
A tip from a reader, a popular Web filter called N2H2 classifies all of ManilaSites.Com as pornography. Screen shot [Scripting News]

...not a surprise since N2H2 is on weak legs. They provide screening software for schools and government agencies. The only thing keeping them alive are a few contracts they hold. The stock is at $.42, and they reported a "Pro forma" net loss for the quarter loss of $510,000. Of course the real loss was much higher - revenue $2.89 million, expenses $4.6 million...you do the math.

These twits used to have live people supplementing the software screening tool they created. Now they pretty much only have the software since they laid off most of the company. You have to love company-speak: "streamlining and redirecting staff, writing off assets, and implementing cost control measures."

What that means is they laid off most everyone, had a grage sale of equipment, wrote off many of the stupid purchases they made and changed coffee vendors...get real, just another dotbomb...mj
