> Stan Brakhage

Experimental director Stan Brakhage, who was considered the most influential avant-garde filmmaker, died in Victoria after a long battle with cancer. He was 70. . . . Brakhage was a pioneer film technician who revolutionized the use of the abstract form. His methods included hand-painting black frames of 16 mm film, gluing objects to film and scratching blank film.
