Thoughts and commentary on books I have read, am currently reading, or would like to read.

I finished up listening to The Summoning God (The Anasazi Mysteries, Book 2).  Very interesting look into the past at the people inhabiting the south-west around 800 years ago.   A second plot line follows modern day archeaologist uncovering the remains of the ancient people in the story.

I read (sight read that is) the Gear's People of the Masks (The First North Americans, Book 10) and found it insightful, but a bit of chore to finish. To be fair, that was a least 3 or 4 years ago when I was down to about 2 non-technical books a year.   I have a feeling that none of the Anasazi books will be that way.

The Summoning God mixes all kinds of elements to keep the storylines moving forward at an incredible pace.   Murder...mystery...suspense...illness...and extremely graphic depictions of the violent and unforgiving culture that these people endured.

The characters are realistic and deep providing much insight to what moral and spiritual forces drove these cultures.  In some ways very similar to our own and in other's so alien and surreal.  That's the Gear's gift.  They have an uncanny way of instructing you while at the same time entertaining you.  I now understand that holocaust is not something historically unique to the 20th century.

I could easily see this one becoming a fast paced movie (with the write mix of director and writer) something like 13th Warrior, The (1999) meets Windwalker (1980).

I've picked this one up off the 'New Books' shelf a couple times now thinking I might gain some insight.  I guess I've been a little reluctant because of the fact that I most likely fall into the focus of this book.  The comments on Slash pretty amusing, but then again just what you might expect fom a crowd of Einsteins.
