802.11b is a technology that is ready today and should be evaluated in k12 projects.

K12 teachers are beginning to be issued laptops with integrated 802.11b.  Not only can teachers roam their school buildings with no wires thanks to longer battery life and WIFI, but they can also visit other school buildings, offices and WIFI hot spots throughout their district with transparent connectivety to the school network, servers, services and the Internet.   Life is good with WIFI.
