Tabletop Triumph or Cold Fusion Fizzle?

I distinctly remember the last go-round on cold fusion. I was so excited about the prospect for human liberation and progress, the relief of poverty, the salvation of the environment, and the reordering of global geopolitics. When I saw this article in the paper this morning, all the old feelings came flooding back.

Once burned, twice shy. At least this experiment was peer reviewed before the experimenters made it public. And it's a long way from even a valid experiment to a viable energy source (they used acetone, for heaven's sake, not exactly the world's most environmentally friendly substance!).

But I can't help wondering: what would the world look like without the power of the BigOilCos, and what would our war against terrorism look like if the good favor of the Saudi government were no longer a high priority?
