Every spring the NYTimes would run an article on the physics of hitting a baseball. The author would go on to explain it was one of the hardest things to do in sports. He usually went on further to say if "stars" in other sports did their things at the same percentage that "star" batters did theirs (one out of every three tries) they would be fired.
Here is a graphic that shows why being a .300 hitter is a big deal.
