Class distinction on Limerick train

Seán O'Neill, Limerick Republican Sinn Féin
April 2, 2003

Class distinction is alive and well and travelling on the 5.20 pm Irish Rail train service from Dublin to Limerick, the local branch of Republican Sinn Féin claimed today.

RSF community affairs spokesman Seán O'Neill from Rosbrien in Limerick said that on Fridays the rail company operates a policy of class distinction that would not be out of place in apartheid South Africa.

Only first class passengers are served hot meals on that train, said Mr. O'Neill. The second class passengers cannot purchase a hot meal - they have to make do with rather tired sandwiches.

A number of people have brought this outrageous situation to our attention in recent days. People travelling from Dublin to Limerick on this particular service are being discriminated against because they do not have first class tickets.

A hot meal will be served to you by Irish Rail catering staff if you have a first class ticket, but first class travel is out of the range of most ordinary people.

The fact is the dining car is off limits to most passengers and only those with first class tickets are served hot meals. This situation is akin to class distinction and tantamount to discrimination against people because of their financial situation.

We are now demanding that all those passengers who want a hot meal on this train should be served - without reference to their class of ticket.
