Weblog entries as sound bites
One of the reasons for the popularity of weblogs
is that the form encourages brevity —
"word bites" instead of sound bites.
In the past, it was difficult and expensive
to get one's words published.
One result was that most writers had to have
one or more of:
This does not seem to me to be the most effective
way to get the best writing into the public eye.
Now, USENET and then weblogs (and a highly-educated
population) lowered the cost of entry.
And google, blogdex, daypop, rankings,
ecosystems, blogtrees, aggregators, and so on,
help us to manage the resulting overload
(so much to read, so little time).
It takes time to write well.
The brevity of weblog entries
allows more of us the chance to
squeeze some writing practice
time into our busy days.
