The schmutz in the sky
We had a nice dinner in Santa Cruz and decided afterwards
to go check out tonight's lunar eclipse. We figured that
since it's rising in the east, the
Santa Cruz Lighthouse field would be a nice place to view it.
The coastline is generally east-west along the Santa Cruz shoreline,
and the view east from the lighthouse (towards Capitola, Aptos and Soquel)
is mostly ocean for quite a ways.
About 200 - 300 other Cruzans had similar ideas, so it was
like a little town party. There were lots of bicycles
(today is also bike-to-work day in our county), dogs, kids,
a drum circle, flag spinners, others spinning flaming club things,
and seals barking out at the point. A couple of flights of seagulls
flew by, and the light from the lighthouse would occasionally cause
one or two of the gulls to shine brightly for an instant.
In
the QTVR, Erik is standing approximately south of the lighthouse,
so if you spin it around (if QTVR works for you) to look at the lighthouse,
then go 90 degrees to the right, you'll see roughly the direction the moon
was from us.
We could see the lights of Monterey/Pacific Grove across the Monterey Bay,
and the power plant at Moss landing.
My headline came from
this KRON TV (SF) story.
