Return of the Kings Canyon
Kings Canyon was grand, weather was great, and it was great to
renew acquaintance with many of the regular visitors. And a few
people who hadn't been on this trip in previous years got to
participate this time.
My nephew Ben and I saw a little king snake on the way up
to Mist Falls, and I got a photo of it. Ben (9 years old)
did fine and had fun on the 9-mile hike. We all went swimming
and jumping off of Muir Rock into the River. The water was a
bit higher than in most previous years, partly because this
trip was held a few weeks earlier in the season.
There was a spot near Muir Rock where people had piled the
river rocks into small half-dams, which narrowed the main
current of the river into a chute. If you got into the
stream above there and laid flat enough, the current would
whisk you down the chute and into the large pool next to
Muir Rock. If you instead sat up a bit, bent at the waist,
your butt would hit several of the rocks on your way down
the chute. Ben's first attempt went "Ow! ... Ow! ... Ow!"
But he tried it several more times, and got better at it.
Deb and Mary did some painting at Roaring River Falls, and
I got a couple of pretty interesting photos of the sun's rays
coming from behind a cloud, in an otherwise clear sky. As
usual, photos will be along later.
