Scotts Searching :: Good Search Tricks :: Over Searching.

Scotts Searching :: Good Search Tricks :: Over Searching

A really good search technique which many people often ignore is "Over Searching".  When you over search, you take a query and expand it to be not just what the user asked for but what the user is likely to want.  Here's a step by step example.

==> Read Story <==

Note: This is pretty simple and short but it nicely illustrates this technique which all too few sites actually implement.

Now that blogrolling.com has added a reciprocal roll (mine is listed in my sidebar under Reciplogroll—I wish it gave sitenames and not URLs, but it's still cool) feature, I wonder if I could add some kind of macro or something that could show the sites that have subscribed to my feed (per the hotlist)? Dan Brickling on Small business blogging.
Very interesting. This is why we are building a very simple blogging module of IdeaTools: it's because we want small businesses to be able to simply add a weblog to their site (there are now hundreds of small business sites hosted on IdeaTools servers). I don't want to compete with other blogging tools, there already are many and a lot of them are very good. But for everybody who's already using IdeaTools the new module will be easy, especially considering that the new tool will be using the same GUI that IdeaTools uses. Soon with IdeaTools you'll be able to manage your e-commerce site, your company brochure-ware site and your weblog from within the same control panel. [Paolo Valdemarin: Paolo's Weblog]

Sharing your browser's bookmarks One of the problems of moving from one computer to the other (or having more than one computer) is that my bookmarks are always stored on the "other" computer or another browser on the same computer. Here's what I've just done to solve this (these instructions are for Explorer/MacOS X users, but I'm sure the same can be done on MacOS 9 and Windows and other browsers, if you know how to do this post the instructions on your weblog and I'll link them here):
  1. Quit Explorer if it's running
  2. Move the favorities file (/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Explorer/Favorities.html) to your Radio UserLand/www/ folder, renaming it Favorities.txt
  3. Create an alias of the file you have just moved into the www folder into the original Preferences/Explorer folder, renaming it back Favorities.html.
  4. Open Explorer
Done, now every time you will add a bookmark in Explorer, Radio will upstream to your weblog a page containing all your bookmarks (in a nice page using your theme) that you can access from any computer just going to your blog address adding /Favorities.html to the url. Consider that doing this will expose your bookmarks to everybody, so if you have any confidential stuff there don't do this (I published my bookmarks on my internal blog which is password protectes). Investing In Human Capital

The first six months of life are the most critical for a developing child.  It is during this time that all neural pathways are developed through the sense of touch.  A baby's mind, body and  trust is developed by being held and loved.  This is why breast feeding is a major advantage to any child.

Nature gave us much of what we need to be good parents in our arms.  If an infant is left unstimulated for too long, the chance for those particular neural pathways to develop is lost.  It is impossible to spoil an infant.  It is possible to rob a child of mental, physical and emotional capacity by being absent too early, too long.  Neural development primarily occurs in the first six months of life.  After that, we're too late.

Unfortunately, most maternity leave is for only 3 months or there is none at all.  Often our children's care and comfort is left to strangers.  Many parents make sacrifices they should not be forced to make.  Six months of ever-present care  is the least we could offer our newborns.  Infants who are held often, whose cries are answered by a caring touch, grow into confidently happy, intellectually boundless and endlessly creative adults.  Three months doesn't come close.

What We Could Have     Once I am in congress I will encourage businesses to offer a 6 month maternity leave for parents---the absolute minimum nature demands.  Companies have nine months to prepare a temp.  In addition to this, I will encourage the construction and development of on-site child care.  Businesses could enjoy a healthy tax break for participating in programs that work to meet the needs of their families.  Local communities would join with the federal government in the investment in their families and their future.  Child care would be more personal.  Parents would have more involvement--and the niche will be tighter.

North Carolinians will enjoy many positive effects.  Businesses would enjoy the advantage of happy employees with happy homes.  Less stress is more productivity.  The stress of child care is enough to push many over the edge or into poverty.  Not only would workers be more productive and feel more valued, but they would be available for their children taking a part in their care.  We give sooo much time to our jobs.  It is our second family, it needs to support the family that comes first.

North Carolina will be more valued as well.  Companies would come here and stay here shouting about their dedication to family.  People would buy their products and services respecting the wonderful family philosophy.  Businesses would enjoy a home in the least expensive state to operate in and the most satisfied people to employ.  Our children will be reared in a spring board of stimulation with their parents just around the corner or even down the hall.  And many new jobs will be created.

A community vested in industry & commerce can never  hold a candle to a community that is first invested in itselfHuman capital is the most valuable capital.  It is a renewed resource.  And its livelihood can be improved.  Dedication to this renewal, to this improvement is the wisest choice for any business, any community and any government.  The only improvement necessary is one which offers true dedication and care for the families of our community.  Invest in human capital.  Invest in each other.  Invest in youself.

People give worth to what they produce.  What they produce is their future.  Invest In Each Other.

Tell congress to love your kid.
