China: 3G licensing delay seen stifling TD-SCDMA. ABN AMRO said any further delay in issuing third generation (3G) mobile technology licenses in China will stifle the development of TD-SCDMA, the country's homegrown 3G standard. But the standard must be taken out of the lab in order to enter the next stage of development, ABN AMRO said. [Daily 3G News]

MVNO's: Having It Both Ways On 3G. That's certainly possible and, if true, the carriers are making a huge mistake. I understand that MVNOs represent a low-cost, high-return option for 3G network operators. Given the huge sums of money they've spent on upgrading to 3G, MVNOs represent a safe way to get some return on that investment. [Daily 3G News]

3G network pricing: welcome to 1993!. Here's one final comparison: our web hosting package costs about 10 pounds a month, and with that we get 20GB of bandwidth. That's about 0.05p per megabyte. The cost of downloading data over the 3G network is thus almost 5000 times as expensive as serving it up. [Daily 3G News]

Fujitsu Creates Electronic Paper++.

epaper_250-1.jpgHere we go. Real electronic paper that's coming out next year. Very nice. Fujitsu has created a form of epaper that can hold images even when unpowered and can gather information wirelessly, leading to some interesting potential uses. The first, and most obvious, thing would be digital newspapers and magazines. You walk up to the kiosk, pay your money, and get a copy of Oui sent down to your epaper for later consumption. Will it happen? Probably not. But we can dream.

XM Buys More Spectrum.

XM purchased WCS Wireless, a small wireless company that owns licenses to frequency bands close to XMs own satellite radio band. This partnership, writes DesignTechnica, is seen as a way " to expand into 'a variety of multimedia subscription services,' including video and data offerings, which would be transmitted over the WCS frequencies. Quite clearly XM is working on something more than just audio at this point and an always on Satellite connection to a live video feed will make cellphone video and Video-on-Demand quite a bit more feasible.

But wait... that's not all! KDDI also announced today that from January 2006, the company will enable customers to use "Mobility Suica" in partnership with East Japan Railway Company (JR) as well (WWJ thinks Big K's PR folks must have missed this weekend's big Tanabata Festival). Vodafone Japan to Open Network. FT.com, 13 July 2005
Vodafone will consider hosting so-called virtual network operators as part of a move to target specific market segments. The world's largest mobile phone operator has so far been very selective in letting potential rivals on to its networks around the world, although it recently signed a deal with Extreme Sports in the UK. The change of direction was revealed on Tuesday by Bill Morrow, the former head of the UK business, who was parachuted into the troubled subsidiary three months ago as part of a management shake-up.
