Mobile Phone Designed for Seniors. Nikkei Electronics, 12 Aug. 2005
DoCoMo will release a new mobile handset able to slow down speakers' voice speed later this month. The key targeted users are the elderly. The speed converter technology used in the handset slows down speakers' voice speed up to 0.7x, so the listener can feel like that the speakers' dialogue goes slowly. By reducing the number of menu items as well as using relatively large icons, screen operation became easier than before. The unit also features an emergency 80 dB alarm system and a built-in pedometer. [Wireless Watch Japan]

Now, Cellphones For $24. Business Standard: Single-chip solution from Texas Instruments will help sell cellphones for Rs 1000 ($24), and countries like India will benefit from this. Texas Instruments has launched the worldâo[dot accent]s first single chip solution for cellular phones. This cost-effective single chip for a handset is expected to boost the production of ultra-low-cost mobile phones in emerging markets like India, China and Latin America.

"Our team in Bangalore has developed this technology, which will help narrow the digital divide. According to Engibous, this solution integrated the bulk of handset electronics onto a single chip to reduce cost, power requirements, board area, and silicon area -- performance factors that are crucial for high-volume entry-level mobile phones. [ContentSutra]

Apparently Asian Newspapers Are Bucking The Digital Trend. The Australian: Newspaper executives spent this week in Cairns trying to solve their industry's greatest challenge: How to make their 400-year old product relevant to the iPod generation. Delegates to the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association conference heard about several success stories amid a 50-year circulation decline.
David Armstrong, editorial director of the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post and former editor-in-chief of The Australian, noted that Asian newspapers were bucking the trend. He said sales of Chinese newspapers had grown by more than 80 per cent since 1990 to a circulation of 40 billion copies. India outstripped that with 45,000 newspaper titles selling about 50 billion copies annually.
"The common thread in much of Asia is that newspapers are completely focused on their readers," he said. "[They] don't seem to be bogged down by preconceptions of what a newspaper should be. So they are prepared to do things differently." [ContentSutra]

O2 - it's going to be a 3G Christmas. Sarin insists it's going to be a 3G Christmas, but his rival at O2, Peter Erskine, still reckons videophone technology won't become mass market until next year. He's right to say that battery life is still too short on many handsets, but then his prediction is hardly surprising, given the fact that O2 decided long ago to delay the roll-out of its 3G network and thus has less in the way of 3G services and handsets to offer than Vodafone.
