Will Europe fall in love with Qualcomm, now it owns Flarion 4G technology? Qualcomm owns most of the patents involved in cellular telephony. Murdoch, WiMAX and The Two Way Web Rupert Murdoch realized long ago that owning content, in and of itself, yielded limited power. His frustrations when negotiating against cable czar John Malone taught him that owning distribution, in addition to content, was essential for market leverage. This is the reason why he pursued DirecTV for ten long years, finally acquiring control of the satellite TV operator in 2003. With DirecTV in hand, Murdoch gained substantial leverage, which he uses every time he needs to negotiate carriage deals for media properties with competitive media outlets like Time Warner and Comcast. Furthermore, owning distribution makes it a lot easier for him to launch new cable/satellite networks (one of reasons why I believe he will use his acquisition of MySpace to compete against MTV head on... Next Frontier: TV for Mobile Phones. WWJ Editors, 10 August 2005 The IHT posted a story on Monday on issues related to television for mobile phones. The story says, in part, "Before true mobile broadcast services can take off, a number of questions have to be answered: Which of at least five delivery methods, ranging from cellular technology to mobile broadcasting via separate wireless frequencies, works best? How will the relationship between television content providers, channel owners and mobile phone operators evolve? What kind of programming, if any, do mobile viewers want, and how much will they be willing to pay for it?" All good questions, we think, but the story fails to report the first real brick wall that that mobile TV services/technologies will hit. [Wireless Watch Japan] 7:15:40 AM ![]() |

The key targeted users are the elderly. The speed converter technology used in the handset slows down speakers' voice speed up to 0.7x, so the listener can feel like that the speakers' dialogue goes slowly. By reducing the number of menu items as well as using relatively large icons, screen operation became easier than before. The unit also features an emergency 80 dB alarm system and a built-in pedometer. [Wireless Watch Japan] 7:15:15 AM ![]() |
Japan Mobile Market Myths from Past and Present. ![]() The recent guest article, Mobile Music Best Practices from Japan and Korea, we posted has resulted in some interesting comments on websites based overseas. It seems that the Today in Japan, marketing for customers to upgrade and listen to full songs on their new mobile devices is everywhere. In print, outdoor and on television commercials, we are seeing massive "i-pod meets mobile phone" promotions. Hence the stereo headphones and J-Pop artists making regular apperances to help push the product. Sure people can use full songs as ring-tones as well, thats a bonus, but that is not how it's be marketed and 'more importantly' being used. You don't have to take our word for it.. visit KDDI's Ad Index website and surf around to watch their current selection of TVCM's. Meanwhile, WWJ subscribers login for more cool links and a quick overview of another interesting mobile music service model coming out of Korea. [Wireless Watch Japan] 7:14:36 AM ![]() |

Content Management Market Hotting Up In India: IDC. Exchange4media.com: The content management software market in Asia-Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) is expected to grow at a five-year compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.6 per cent to cross the $200-million-mark by 2010, with India poised to post the highest growth rate within the region at 27.7 per cent, a latest study by IDC has said. The content management software market in Asia-Pacific is currently pegged at $102 million. "Much of the dust of the recent years' acquisitions has settled in 2004, although there were still a number of smaller acquisitions aimed generally at rounding out one's product range. Despite the hype about Enterprise Content Management (ECM) in the past year, we see that demand for departmental level implementations has not decreased," Ms Sharon Tan, Market Analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific said. The initiatives such as e-government projects and digital archiving systems for government documents, and compliance-related spending would continue to be some of the key market drivers in the region for content management. There would also be increasing information needs and complexity on how to store, manage, and access information efficiently. The report further said that there would be greater pressure on companies to invest in or upgrade their content management software to cope with this, particularly in more advanced Asia-Pacific economies such as Australia and Korea.
