"So make your IT plans. But don't ignore the possibilities that Open Source brings to the table." says Russell Pavlicek. I still think Open Source projects are great for government. Not having to deal with licensing. The best result from Open Source in government might be realized if we encourage our developers to contribute. The amount of taxpayer dough that could be saved could be significant. The better security is also a money saver. I can't wait to get my hands on a Linux instance or two on the mainframe.

Sun is developing a UDDI registry for the enterprise. This is cool. My team has written a billing system for the City and County of Denver, Wastewater Management Division (We move 65,000,000 gallons of sludge to treatment everyday). A couple of weeks ago we were able to plug in a SOAP client to the server, making our Account object the City's first "Web Service".

We're moving from the application server that we wrote to J2EE (JBoss) as we speak. We had to write an RMI server when we started in 1998. The architecture will work OK because we used Interfaces the first time. Same methods, new classes to serve up the objects. We plan to offer the system as Open Source depending on the City's legal staff and their opinions.

I ran across an old friend, Barry, today. He lives in the neighborhood and has given up construction in California to do sculpture in Colorado. Sounds like a good change. He was on his way to breakfast with another old and dear friend, Alice, who moved home to Colorado after a time in Alaska. This in itself is not earthshaking stuff.

What struck me is that we all live within a few blocks of each other and I didn't know it. After 9/11 there was a call to learn more about the Middle East to understand why there was so much hatred for the USA there. Here's another call. Open your eyes when you're out there on the street, keep your head up. Learn the names of the neighbors around you. Learn their kid's names especially. They'll bring some energy into your lives (and maybe they'll cut your lawn). Look up old friends. The knowledge you've all gained, and maybe the wisdom, will make for a good time. Say "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" to people in your life. Make an effort to be cheerful.
