2004 Presidential Election

MyDD: "Zogby has declared that four new states--Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina and Virginia--are now swing states and will be included in future Zogby Interactive Battleground polls."

Here's the Zogby announcement. You can subscribe to the polling data there. Here's the link to the Wall Street Journal/Zogby Battleground States map (last updated August 2nd).

This Survey USA poll confirms Zogby's contention that Colorado is a swing state this November. As I reported yesterday John Kerry and George Bush are tied at 47% in Colorado.

Electoral-vote.com: "We have six and half new polls to report today. The most important one is in Colorado, where Kerry and Bush are now tied at 47% each according to the latest Survey USA poll. Yesterday's lead story was about the Colorado referendum (ed. Amendment 36), how the Democrats want to split the state's votes in the electoral college so Bush won't get all of them. It will be interesting to see what happens now that they are tied. Suppose Kerry takes the lead there. Will the Democrats suddenly oppose te referendum to avoid giving Bush any electoral votes? Will the Republicans suddenly support it? It could get pretty complicated if the lead switches back and forth. Stay tuned for all the excitement (if constitutional amendments in Colorado turn you on, at least)."

Email from the votemeister informs me that he's purchased and deployed a new server for the election and all the traffic that he's getting. What a guy. He needed to upgrade his hardware since Dave Winer, Matthew Gross, and today, Josh Marshall, are all linking to him.

Update: Senator John Kerry leads President Bush, 52% to 42%, in Ohio, according to the Daily Kos. Here's a link to a story about a recent Gallup poll from CNN.

Update: Andrew Olmstead: "I'll be glad when the election is over for one simple reason: it's become next to impossible to find a lefty blogger who isn't desperately partisan. I expect that from Hesiod and Atrios, but I had come to expect a little better from people like Kevin Drum. More fool me." Thanks to Walter In Denver for the link.

Update: Gallup: "Among all registered voters nationwide, the most recent three polls show Kerry with an average one-point lead over Bush -- 48% to 47%. Kerry's average lead among the three polls before that (in June and early July) was six points, 50% to 44%." Thanks to Blogs for Bush for the link.

Update: C-Span has linked to a video of a debate between John O'Neill and John Kerry from 1972. Thanks to the Daily Kos for the link. The film clip reminded me of the divisiveness and bitterness of those times.

O'Neill has the author of Unfit for Command.

Update: Daily Kos: "Pennsylvania - Quinnipiac University, 8/11-16, MoE 2.6%, Kerry 48, Bush 43."

Update: Taegan Goddard: "Here are the latest state polls from the presidential race: Pennsylvania - Kerry 48%, Bush 43% (Quinnipiac); Michigan - Kerry 48%, Bush 42% (Strategic Vision); Wisconsin - Kerry 47%, Bush 46% (Strategic Vision); Georgia - Bush 54%, Kerry 40% (Strategic Vision); Oklahoma - Bush 56%, Kerrry 36% (NRSC); New Mexico - Kerry 46%, Bush 46% (Rasmussen)."

Denver November 2004 Election

The Secretary of State has certified Amendment 37 for the November 2nd ballot, according to the Rocky Mountain News [August 18, 2004, "Energy proposal makes ballot"]. From the article, "The plan would require Colorado's seven largest utilities to get 10 percent of their electricity from renewable sources such as the sun or wind by 2015. It also limits the amount that an average residential electric bill can be increased by the new mandate to 50 cents a month...Manolo Gonzalez-Estay, a spokesman for Coloradans for Clean Energy, said Colorado is served by 60 utilities that generate electricity using primarily coal and natural gas. He said requiring 10 percent of electricity to come from the wind and sun was equivalent to eliminating the pollution from 600,000 cars per year. But Stoffel said companies like Xcel already are working on renewable energy. The Public Utilities Commission last week approved Xcel's request to add 500 megawatts of wind power to its system as part of its least-cost resource plan. The plan calls for 3,600 megawatts of generating capacity to be added to the system by 2013, Stoffel said. Xcel expedited the wind power portion to take advantage of a federal production tax credit that Congress is expected to approve, possibly later this year."

Here are the statewide ballot issues for the November 2nd election from the Rocky Mountain News:

Referendum A: State personnel system

Referendum B: Obsolete constitutional provisions

Amendment 34: Construction liability/property owners' rights

Amendment 35: Tobacco tax increase for health-related purposes

Amendment 36: Selection of presidential electors

Amendment 37: Renewable energy requirement

Al Knight discusses the ballot issues in his column in today's Denver Post [August 18, 2004, "Ballot issues disappoint"].

Colorado Luis: "Can we now stop talking about that Electoral College 'reform' initiative as a good way to peel off electoral votes from Bush in a 'red' state?"
