Marijuana Stamp Act Here's a historical look at one item from the history of marijuana in Denver from today's Rocky Mountain News [November 5, 2005, "Pot considered 'murder weed' in 1937"]. From the article, "On Oct. 2, 1937, in the somewhat shady Lexington Apartments at 1200 California St. in Denver, Samuel R. Caldwell became the first person in the United States to be arrested on a marijuana charge. Caldwell, a 58-year-old unemployed laborer moonlighting as a dealer, was nailed by the FBI and Denver police for peddling two marijuana cigarettes to one Moses Baca, 26. If you're wondering why it took the U.S. government so long to bust a pot dealer, it's because until the Marijuana Stamp Act was passed - on you guessed it, Oct. 2, 1937 - cannabis wasn't illegal." Bill Maher moving his show to Denver? You have to feel sorry for Councilman Charlie Brown. He's worried that people are laughing at Denver for passing I-100 (Alcohol-Marijuana Equalization Initiative) last Tuesday. The Initiative was spear-headed by SAFER. The Councilman will be happy to know that Bill Maher announced last night that Real Time with Bill Maher was taking a break until February - when they will return from, "their new home in Denver, Colorado." Coyote Gulch knows that Maher was not serious - he's a comedian. If the councilman hadn't ridiculed and fought the Peacefulness Initiative (Initiative 101) so hard in 2003 he might have additional coping mechanisms to help this time around.
