Alito for Supremes?
A picture named nuclear.jpg

DemNotes writes, "Now that Bush has nominated Scalito to the Supreme Court, all eyes turn to the U.S. Senate. Ken Salazar has responded with this initial statement."

TalkLeft: "Hoping to regain the support of his base while provoking a fight that will distract the media from his scandal-ridden administration, President Bush announced the nomination of Judge Sam Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court."

The Moderate Voice: "President George Bush has nominated conservative judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court - giving conservatives the kind of judge they hoped they were going to get after John Roberts was named Chief Justice and likely guaranteeing a Democratic battle."

Referendum C to Lose?

Colorado Pols reports that, "The word today from many insiders close to the YES campaign on Referenda C&D is that the measure appears on its way to failure. Poll numbers have apparently weakened over the course of the last week, and many insiders close to the campaign are preparing for the worst. The weather doesn't look like it will cooperate for the YES campaign, either. It is thought that low turnout would benefit the YES campaign more than the NO campaign, but tomorrow looks like it will be sunny and clear...just not for the YES folks."

Colorado Luis: "The big issue is, of course, Referenda C and D. I am not optimistic that either will pass, because the Republican media consultants who have put together the pro-C and D campaigns have failed to make any argument directed to the sixty-plus percent of Colorado voters who are not members of the Republican Party."

Alito for Supremes?
A picture named nuclear.jpg

Political Wire reports that, "President Bush will nominate 3rd Circuit Appeals Court Judge Samuel Alito for the U.S. Supreme Court, CNN reports. Nicknamed 'Scalito,' after conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, the pick is sure to start a major battle in the U.S. Senate over his confirmation. The New York Times notes Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) warned Bush over the weekend not to pick Alito. Said Reid: 'I think it would create a lot of problems.' PoliPundit counts the votes and finds 50 to confirm Alito. However, the more important count is whether the Democrats have the votes to force a filibuster. Think Progress details some of Alito's opinions and the AP runs a good profile."

Bull Moose: "This war between the bases will center on abortion and Alito's sole dissent concerning the notification of husbands. It seems likely that this nomination will result in a filibuster and the deployment of the nuclear option. It is all so very predictable. Everyone will play his/her designated role in this epic Washington confrontation. And the President has played the polarization card."

Blogs for Bush: "Well, I was admittedly not thrilled with Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court, Judge Alito, however, I can say is a good pick, and I am sure conservatives will support this nomination. It's time to start a coalition..."

Oval Office 2008: "Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel may have had a bit of a slow start to his 2008 campaign, but he's beginning to generate some positive column inches now."

Vote Tomorrow
A picture named vote.jpg

Don't forget to vote tomorrow in Denver. Here's the precinct finder from DenverGov. Here's the link to the Denver Election Commission website. You can also download voting addresses here.

The Denver Post editorial staff blasts the Denver Election Commission in today's issue [October 31, 2005, "Update election management"]. From the article, "Innovation seems to scare the commission: It originally planned to use centers where voters could cast ballots anywhere in the city tomorrow but then reverted to the same precinct voting system used in 2004 when 40 percent of all voting problems in Colorado occurred in Denver."

Immigration Reform?

Here are more details on the proposed immigration reform law slated to appear on next year's ballot from the Rocky Mountain News [October 31, 2005, "Illegal immigration foes start ballot effort"]. From the article, "Critics of illegal immigration want Coloradans to vote next year on a constitutional amendment to block immigrants from receiving government services. The proposal, which was filed last week at the state Capitol, is identical to one launched by U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo in 2004 that didn't make it onto the ballot. The proposal would bar all services except emergency care and those mandated by the federal government, such as education for students in public schools. It would apply to all governmental entities: the state, counties, cities and other political subdivisions."
