Referenda C and D
Early voting starts Monday in Denver .
Here's Part I of a series of in-depth looks at the issues around Referendums C and D from the Rocky Mountain News [October 15, 2005, "It's all about choices"]. From the article, "The November election on Referendums C and D is a turning point for Colorado. Will this state continue as a leader in the tax-cut movement, showing the way to smaller government? Or will it restore some of the services for the sick and poor, subsidies for a college education, road repairs and other pieces of government that were cut during the recession? Good stuff Rocky.
The Rocky is reporting that Governor Owens and Douglas Bruce duked it out (with words) in Pueblo yesterday [October 15, 2005, "Owens, Bruce embody GOP rift"]. From the article, "Two icons of conservatism in Colorado clashed in Pueblo Friday, as Gov. Bill Owens and Taxpayer's Bill of Rights author Douglas Bruce painted starkly different pictures of the the state's budget situation during a debate over referendums C and D."
If you're curious about the amount TABOR refund you'll be giving up if Referendum C passes the Rocky has a nice table here.
Not all is well in ProComp land, according to the Rocky Mountain News [October 15, 2005, "Some teachers oppose 3A merit pay proposal"]. From the article, "A former board member for the Denver Classroom Teachers Association, the teachers union, vonDrehle-Turner is part of a small core of teachers calling themselves Teachers Opposing ProComp. They believe many more teachers dislike ProComp but have been reluctant to publicly criticize a plan pushed by Hickenlooper and other city and school leaders."
Mike Littwin weighs in on opponents of Referendum C in his column in today's Rocky [October 15, 2005, "Littwin: Ref C foes: Bullies in the schoolyard"]. He writes, "Like you, I thought the fight over Refs C & D was about TABOR and the ratchet effect and the fundamentals of governing. Turns out, it's about ninth grade."
Bob Ewegen writes, "Now it's the anti-tax think-tankers who are hopping mad at Denver Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput," in his column in today's Denver Post [October 15, 2005, "People of faith rally to C and D"].
