Immigration

Oval Office 2008: "When someone calls Kansas Republican Senator Sam Brownback 'as left as they come on this issue,' one of two things is true. Either you're reading a blog written by someone who thinks that Republicans are all Communists and that Gengis Khan was a misunderstood visionary; or you're listening to Colorado Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo, and the topic is immigration."

Medicare

Daily Kos: "Republicans, even President Bush himself, have been forced to admit what Democrats have said all along: the implementation of the Medicare Part D benefit has been a disaster. A study by the Democratic staff of the House Government Reform Committee reveals how costly the plan really is. Congressman Tom Allen of Maine had asked for the investigation."

Colorado Marriage Amendment

Here's an article about signature gathering for the Colorado Marriage Amendment from Friday's Denver Post. They write, "Coloradans for Marriage, a group established to push for a marriage-defining state constitutional amendment, has kicked off its effort to gather the required signatures to put the issue on the November ballot. With petition language finalized, volunteers Tuesday night began gathering signatures at Republican caucuses, said Jon Paul, executive director of the coalition of conservative groups spearheading the drive. Although part of the group's strategy centers on churches already in tune with the proposed amendment, which would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman, Paul said he expects to find broad support."

Denver City Council elections

Here's an article about early interest in running for Denver City Council in 2007. From the article, "Former state Sen. Penfield Tate is eyeing an open seat on the Denver City Council next year...

"Interest is primarily focused on the two council seats that will open because of term limits: Neither Elbra Wedgeworth nor Kathleen MacKenzie can run for re-election. So far, only one person has made it official. Chris Nevitt, policy director of the union-backed Front Range Economic Strategy Center, has filed paperwork to run for the District 7 seat held by MacKenzie. MacKenzie's senior analyst, Julie Connor, also said she would definitely run for the seat. Councilwoman Carol Boigon's aide, Shelley Watters, treasurer of the Platt Park People's Association, confirmed that she is running for the same seat. Rocker Jake Schroeder, lead singer of Opie Gone Bad, said he hopes to parlay his community-service experience into a run for MacKenzie's seat as well...

"There is speculation among local politicians that Councilwoman Marcia Johnson may get a challenge from former Councilwoman Joyce Foster...

"Early indications are that he [Penfield Tate] might face a challenge from Central Baptist Church's senior pastor, the Rev. Willie Simmons."

Animas-La Plata update
A picture named animaslaplataconstruction.jpg

Here's an update on the construction of the Animas-La Plata project from CBS4Denver.com. They write, "Animas-La Plata Project dam construction, which was closed down for the winter, is coming out of hibernation...

"Four feet of rock and soil that protected the clay core on the upstream side of the dam from freezing and thawing has been removed. Now, adding more clay, the Zone 1 fill, can continue. The precautionary earth coat averted fractures in the bank of clay that must be evenly compacted.

"Before construction was halted, the clay core and bulwarks of sand, gravel and boulders that form part of the structure had risen more than 30 feet above the bedrock bottom of the dam. The dam will rise 217 feet, with a crest 1,640 feet long.

"Construction continued through the winter, however, on the 1,400-foot outlet tunnel on the left abutment of the dam that will be used to release water. Some grouting to seal fissures was done on the left abutment during the down time.

"The dam will back up 120,000 acre-feet of water for three American Indian tribes and non-tribal water users. The lake that forms has been named Lake Nighthorse after retired U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Ignacio...

"The overall project is 32 percent to 34 percent complete and is on track to be done in 2010, Beck said. Specific percentage of completion for each component of the job is hard to estimate."
