Global warming?
Science Blog: "A BBC News story reports findings from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) that the rate of increase of atmospheric greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere is unprecedented, at least over the past 800,000 years. Studying a deep ice core sample, the scientists have not only been able to measure the greenhouse gas concentrations in ancient atmospheres but also the average temperatures. The result, according to the BBC report, is that carbon dioxide concentration and temperature rise and fall in lockstep. The report quotes BAS scientist Dr. Eric Wolff, who saw no signs that geological or biological systems have served as CO2 sinks to mitigate the increases. Wolff told the BBC that the fastest observed increase in CO2 was about 30 parts per million (ppm) in 1000 years, in contrast to present circumstances in which "the last 30 ppm of increase has occurred in just 17 years. We really are in the situation where we don't have any analogue in our records."

Gay marriage
Colorado Confidential follows the money around the proponents of gay marriage. They write, "Gay marriage and domestic partnerships. The two phrases don't usually invoke images of dollar signs, but if recent financial reports are any indication, groups dealing with the two issues are packing some major cash."

Preemptive strike at Iran?
Gary Hart (via the Huffington Post): "It should come as no surprise if the Bush Administration undertakes a preemptive war against Iran sometime before the November election. Were these more normal times, this would be a stunning possibility, quickly dismissed by thoughtful people as dangerous, unprovoked, and out of keeping with our national character. But we do not live in normal times. And we do not have a government much concerned with our national character. If anything, our current Administration is out to remake our national character into something it has never been."

Amendment 43 and Referendum I
Local clergy held a rally against Amendment 43 at the state capitol yesterday, according to the Rocky Mountain News. From the article, "Rev. Phil Campbell, founder of the Colorado Clergy for Equality in Marriage and director of ministry studies at Iliff School of Theology, said constitutions are written to give and protect rights, not take them away. Furthermore, he said, blocking someone else's legal protections does not strengthen marriage, prevent divorce or protect children. Lisa Moreno, spokeswoman for a new political committee called Don't Mess with Marriage, noted that the amendment is unnecessary because state law already limits marriage to a relationship between a man and a woman...
"The coalition behind the rally includes representatives from the American Baptist Church, Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Presbyterian Church, Reform Judaism, United Church of Christ and United Methodist Church. Many at the midday rally were also in support of Referendum I, a separate ballot issue that would allow gay couples to register as domestic partners and assume many of the rights and responsibilities associated with marriage."
