2003 Denver Mayoral Transition
According to the Denver Post [July 30, 2003, "6 vying to be police chief"] Mayor Hickenlooper has narrowed the list of candidates for Police Chief to six candidates, all of whom are veterans of the police department. According to the Post the six finalists are: "Chief Gerry Whitman, a 21-year veteran, former District 6 commander and patrol division chief who oversaw security for the Oklahoma City bombing trial. Cmdr. Brian Gallagher, a 26-year veteran, now commander of District 1 in northwest Denver. Cmdr. Dave Abrams, a 32-year veteran, now deputy chief in charge of special operations, which include the Patrol Division, the Criminal Investigations Division and Public Information Office. Capt. Rudy Sandoval, a 33-year veteran, now commander of District 4 in southwest Denver. Capt. John Lamb, a 21-year veteran, former District 6 commander and former head of the civil liabilities section who now runs the traffic operations bureau. Special Operations Division Chief Juan Maldonado, a 32-year veteran and commander of special operations, who was a finalist for the chief's job won by Tom Sanchez after the retirement of Chief Dave Michaud in 1998."
