The proposed amendment to the Colorado Constitution to define marriage is the subject of this article from the Denver Post [February 2, 2006, "Gay-marriage face-off"]. From the article, "Proponents of amending Colorado's constitution to define marriage as uniting one man and one woman officially launched a campaign Wednesday expected to feature big money, the national spotlight and carefully calculated messages from both sides."

"The amendment sponsors, Coloradans for Marriage, hope to collect far more than the 68,000 petition signatures needed to qualify for the November ballot, said Bishop Phillip Porter Jr., who filed ballot language on behalf of the group...

"The opposition group, Coloradans for Fairness and Equality, frames the proposal as unnecessary, discriminatory against gays and lesbians, a ploy to turn out social-conservative voters and potentially harmful to the economy...

"Statehouse Democrats have proposed a ballot initiative that would grant gays and lesbians domestic-partner benefits. Meanwhile, a Republican senator has proposed giving same-sex couples and adult children living with elderly parents and grandparents some legal privileges afforded to married couples."

Here's an article about Bill Ritter from today's Denver Post [February 2, 2006, "Candidate Ritter quietly canvassing"]. They write, "While political observers speculate ad nauseam that a certain Denver mayor might force him out of the Democratic race, Ritter has blocked out the noise, jumped into his white Ford pickup truck and rumbled along the paved and dirt roads of Colorado.

"He's learned perhaps more than he's politicked, he says, which is important when it comes to understanding the needs of voters in a state where a few miles can separate rain and drought, farms and ski resorts.

"La Plata County residents are worried about oil and gas extraction creeping up on their developed areas, he says. In Garfield County, an emerging concern is air quality. Archuleta County voters are talking about education and the CSAPs; in Elbert County, it's illegal immigration and the Super Slab toll road."
