From The Pueblo Chieftain: "The Lower Arkansas Valley is part of the 4th Congressional District that gives Bob Schaffer a crucial home base in his run for U.S. Senate, past elections show...Until leaving after 2002 to fulfill a term-limits pledge, Schaffer served for three terms as the 4th district's congressman. He was unopposed for re-election his final term...The Lower Ark counties in the district are Prowers, Otero, Crowley, Kiowa, Baca and Bent. All lean Republican, and all, but Bent, usually break for GOP candidates by large margins...Early polls from Rasmussen Reports list the Udall-Schaffer race as a toss-up, further indication of Schaffer's strong support in the 4th district."

Mark Udall accepted the nomination of the state Democratic party yesterday in Colorado Springs at their state convention, according to The Denver Post. He's been campaigning for months. His Republican opponent is Bob Schaffer. From the article:

Democrat Mark Udall on Saturday accepted his party's nomination for the U.S. Senate and vowed to reach across the aisle to solve the problems facing both Colorado and the country. Flanked by his family on the floor of the World Arena, Udall, a fifth-generation Westerner, touted his self-described independence, innovative thinking and ability to work with others as must-have credentials for the next senator serving Colorado. And he promised to continue building upon Colorado's quest to find energy alternatives and creating "green" jobs in the state. "It's not about right or left, Republican or Democrat. It's about your future," said Udall, who is serving his fifth term representing the 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. "It's going to take every bit of our Western strength, our practical problem-solving, our independent thinking and our common sense to get our country back on track again."

Here's the link to his remarks at the convention from The Denver Post. He said of Coloradans, "We are humble, hard-working, and full of hope; proud yet pragmatic; fiercely independent; protective of our privacy; and we hold a firm belief in self-reliance. But we also believe in the strength that comes from working together, sharing common goals and looking out for one another."

More coverage from The Pueblo Chieftain. From the article:

The convention, which saw a record turnout, featured speeches from Democrats of every ilk, from such party leaders as Gov. Bill Ritter, U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, to various delegate candidates for the August Democratic National Convention in Denver. Because of the large turnout, party officials said they wouldn't be able to post the results for those delegates until later this week. Party leaders called on the rank-in-file to begin their campaigns not only for who ultimately wins the Democratic presidential nomination - Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama - but also for congressional and legislative candidates...

Like the precinct assemblies earlier this year, the weekend's events attracted people who had never participated in the process. Margaret Bennett and Ben Fransua were two of those people. Both Pueblo residents, the two said they turned out because both felt an excitement for this year's presidential race they had never felt before. They were among the estimated 10,000 in attendance for the session that began just after 7 a.m. and was marked by congested roadways, a busy parking lot and a waiting line that extended around the World Arena.

Squarestate.net (Colorado's representative on the DNCC State Blogger Corps) was on hand to live blog the convention.
