Denver November 2004 Election
Jim Nicholson has dropped out of the race for Ben Nighthorse Campbell's U.S. Senate seat, according to the Rocky Mountain News [March 15, 2004, "GOP's short list shrinking"]. From the article, "In a statement dictated from Rome where he is ambassador to the Vatican, Nicholson cited logistical challenges as his main reason for not mounting a campaign to replace Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who will not seek re-election. Although calling the Senate 'one of the biggest, most important jobs in the world,' Nicholson said he is 'very committed and engaged here in Rome as the president's ambassador to the Vatican, and Suzanne and I could not get home to Colorado in time to properly build an organization and mount the campaign that will be needed to win.' Lt. Gov. Jane Norton said Friday that she is considering running but that she wanted to spend the weekend discussing the possibility with her husband. Former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer, who stepped down last year to honor a term-limits pledge, said late Sunday that he will announce his candidacy today. He will become the first Republican to file as a candidate."
