On Deciding . . . Better log A news page for the philosophical action site, "On Deciding . . . Better" My New Guru At the end of last week I bought a discount book at a local clearance bookseller. I'd never heard of David Allen or seen the book "Getting Things Done'. I did my usual read through and then over the weekend read it through again. By Sunday night I had radically refigured my style of working.
Allen's system is aimed at helping one gain control over one's environment by comprehensively gathering and dispositioning inputs in a "trusted" external system. This is combined with an idea that readers of ODB will be familar with, seeking actions that can be done now. If it can't be done now, Allen sees the input as either reference or in the "someday/maybe" category of existance. Overall, the goal is to live in the present rather than fretting about the future. With a command of the environment, rapidly and effectively responding to each input and living in the now, Allen promises a life of less stress.
So far, I agree. His system systematically avoids the Decision Theory goals of defining goals and making choices. He'd prefer to let this occur intuitively as one seeks the actions in the present that feel most appropriate at the time. 9:47:00 PM
