Sweet Celebration: Richard Rodgers "With Lorenz Hart (1895-1943), Rodgers wrote such hits as Babes in Arms, On Your Toes, The Boys From Syracuse and Pal Joey. They nudged the musical toward sophisticated content while introducing standards that perfected the American popular song: My Funny Valentine, Manhattan, Where or When, The Lady Is a Tramp, Isn't It Romantic?, This Can't Be Love, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." Check out that list of tunes. All classics. My theory is that the tunes that are mentioned in articles on the web are the ones that are the most popular and well-known. That's really one goal of next Thursday show: Remind people how many Richard Rodgers tunes they know that they may NOT know Rodgers wrote. Case in point, I can't recall reading that "This Can't Be Love" was a Rodgers tune. And I love that tune. I can tell I'm going to come up with my list of tunes pretty quickly.
The hard part is going to be finding the definitive Jazz versions of these tunes. I just posted a Peggy Lee version of "Lover" that is in that category. And John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" will be there also. Ella's Songbook discs will be used. There's a new Rodgers tribute disc which may get a spin, if I can get a copy. |
BBC: Peggy Lee: Lady of jazz "She started to take charge of her professional life, and her innovative recording of the Rodgers and Hart composition Lover resulted from her ignoring Richard Rodgers's strict rules about how his songs were to be interpreted."
Here's one to pull for the show for next Thursday, June 27, 2002. It's going to be a dedication to the music of Richard Rodgers, on the day before his 100th Birthday (or anniversary of his birth). He was born June 28, 1902. |
Smoking. "Here's something I'm not forgetting. I am now an ex-smoker. I want to say that in public. Of course I still really want to smoke.[Scripting News]
Dave's back and it's great to know he's surviving. Sounds like some sort of heart attack or major lung failure problem. Anyway, good luck with those cravings! Keep writing!! |
