I need to say a few words about the Andy show in LA. It didn't stink. How could it - Warhol is one of the most recognized names of the twentieth century, this 300 piece exhibit was placed in a most fantastic museum and Andy Warhol was a damn creative person. As a retrospective however, the show failed.
It is the attempt to be retrospective that gives rise to my
difficulty. Warhol was, above all else, about people, community and environment. The factory was only hinted at in the first room of the exhibit - a corner was filled with oversize Brillo boxes and a greater than lifesized Andy stepped into the room from behind a photographed stack of the same boxes. I was filled with excitement and expectations. That was soon dispelled in subsequent rooms with works from the 40s (private drawings) the 50s (gold leaf shoes) and the 60s (finally!) with their repitition, repittion, repttion, reptton....
It was, of course, during the 60s that Warhol reached peak mode. ... tbc
