This New York Times article discusses the impressive artworks presented by the Colección Cisneros in an educational exhibit and website about Avant-Garde Latin American art.
As you can see from the examples, Latin American artists were at the forefront of twenty century art, particularly from the 40s through the 60s when abstract art had its 15 years of fame.
