New York Times science writer Dennis Overbye has an article about the history of String Theory in today's edition. It's very detailed, humorously done and assumes that you hae been keeping up for the last twenty years. Don't worry though if you haven't - you can read up in about twenty minutes. (On a photographic note, notice that all three of the photos from the NYT have blackboards in them. Not glaring white boards like we get these days - real chalk blackboards.)
I had some thoughts on this new-fangled membrane cosmology in July of 1995. I left it in the arm waving stage because the math was beyond my simple mind. But you can get the idea, this seems to be describe the current string theory derived hypothesis for the structure of the universe. My thoughts at the time were heavily influenced by the writings (and moreso, the drawings) of Stanford's Andre Linde.
