I think it may be possible to use technology that is within our current means to conduct a controlled evolution of a religion. One with the benefits of the current crop of naturally evolved religions, but without the problems. (Such as, oh, the Crusades, and the belief held by some that pious Muslims should kill Americans whenever they have the opportunity.) And, possibly, to evolve it to be compelling enough that it spreads like wildfire and has a profound effect on the world.
