Sun Microsystems' Co - Founder to Resign. Bill Joy, a Sun Microsystems co-founder once dubbed the Thomas Edison of the Internet, is leaving the company. By The Associated Press. [New York Times: Technology]

Yesterday at a meeting of my new company's techies we commented how out of touch with reality Sun look to us. No direction, no marketing. It isn't even a contender for us. How sad that a company gets broken by a lack of vision. What Sun needs is to do what Apple did: Drop the war with Micro$oft (you are going to loose anyway), concentrate on markets you can win and make the best product for those market. You have to be price competitive, but you also have to innovate... Sun has done little of either and what it has done it has failed to communicate... I love Sun, but I think it's going the way of SGI (another company I loved).

Music Companies and Lawsuits. AP: Record Industry Sues Music File Swappers . The recording industry filed hundreds of lawsuits Monday against individual music lovers,... [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

Watch out for the consequences of these suits. I predict the following. A lot of young people will take on physical piracy, it is harder to catch those selling CDs on the street or on school. It would be more expensive, but it will work. Tech savvy people will continue to use P2P systems, but now those will be encrypted. As time passes the systems will be easier to use and the situation will be the same as now. Finally, congress people that get money from record companies will face politically motivated people that will fight them every step of the way. At the end this last part is what spells doom for the record industry. Yes, for now file sharing (in the US) will diminish... Short sight, short term gain... In the long run, they will be dead.
