Listen to the Sky [Slashdot]
locating mobile phones as dialup listening stations is a novel
broadcast idea and balloons as low flying communication satelites is
another novel idea but the combination of listening to the upper wind
is less exciting. Perhaps using those little model planes/drones
to carry cellphone conference calls could enable emergency search and
rescure to workers effectively cope with difficult terrain. If
one presses the idea just a little so the remotely deployed cellphone
also takes snapshots regularly with its digital camera then we have a
really protable cellphone wecam that could be used to "broadcast" class
meetings and field trips to a dialup community. Pressing still
further this cellphone enabled class would make communication on field
trips with both managable and monitorable for elementry school children
on up to adults on educational travel tours.
The portable cellphone antana raised on a balloon then again seems like
a feasible backup when some classmate appeared to be lost or out of
sight. (an antena balloon on a nanofiber string could go pretty
high up for wide area coverage), -- cheers BL
