Sean FitzGerald doing a good job defending SecondLife.

Sean FitzGerald has been doing a good job rebutting the rather shallow criticisms of Second Life that have been coming out of late. Here[base ']s he[base ']s response to to Graham Attwell[base ']s post - Creativity Costs Money in Second Life. I have been bookmarking some of the other criticisms coming through, but am yet to read a single thing that even scratches beneath the surface of Second Life experience. What a shame some web2 spokes people are so entrenched and negative towards this early rise of web3 and can[base ']t bring themselves to look and think deeper about the phenomenon - or at least start by getting the right end of the stick!

Graham Attwell - Creativity Costs Money in Second Life - The Wales Wide Web. Pretty much my experience in Second Life (and yes, I've put in the hours): "the main education areas are pretty peaceful - no-one but me ever appears to be there. And pretty dull - a few notices and advertising for on-line courses -what is innovative in that. OK - I see some of the universities are developing on-line classrooms. But why?" And also: "The whole model of SL is a capitalist model and doing anything costs. This is not a tool for free public education." The Web: That Was an Interesting Film, but It Had Way Too Much Product Placement. This holiday season, marketing [base "]creatives[per thou] are adding cinematic chic and odd flashes of programming to the online shilling of clothes. By VIRGINIA HEFFERNAN. [NYT > Technology] the subtle risk of the video explosion is product placement into seemingly neutral productions and the sub-threshold persuasion that can be quite effective in reducing resistance to "new" products --BL

Google Steps More Boldly Into PayPal[base ']s Territory. Google[base ']s aggressive promotion of its Checkout payment service has helped speed its adoption by online merchants. By MIGUEL HELFT. [NYT > Technology] This could be very important for on-demand education services in the near-term future of disaggregated content. -- BL

Should JavaScript Get More Respect?. An anonymous reader points out an article in IBM's Crossing Borders series about the language features of JavaScript, surely the Rodney Dangerfield of scripting languages. But with increasing use in such technologies as Ajax, Apache Cocoon, ActionScript, and Rhino, some industry leaders are taking a fresh look at the language. From the article: "Nearly every Web developer has cursed JavaScript at one time or another. Until recently, many developers had all but written off JavaScript as a necessary evil at best or a toy at worst... But JavaScript is becoming increasingly important, and it remains the most broadly available scripting language for Web development."[Slashdot]

No proprietary chargers and data cables any more. Must use USB for charging etc. "[Slashdot] finally some government standards to end the junk hardware chaos -- perhaps the rest of the world can learn from this strategic counter measure to the electronic garbage landfill  -- BL

Companies Betting on WiMAX. PreacherTom writes "This week, two companies [~] NextWave and Clearwire [~] filed to go public and make their fortunes with WiMAX, a wireless broadband technology expected to make serious inroads into the telecom market by offering a high-speed alternative to DSL, Cable, and other current offerings. Market researcher Gartner Dataquest expects the North American WiMAX services market to swell from 30,000 connections in 2006 to 21.2 million by 2011. Could this be the new backbone of the mobile effort?" [Slashdot]
