Discussion on Slashdot of this development, LocustWorld, the development group, and the MeshAP-05 Page

Disclaimer 1 - From all indications, this software is, or is intended to eventually be Open Source. I haven't been able to find anything that says, specifically, definitively, that MeshAP is Open Source. So all this celebratory prose may be a bit premature, but if not for this software, then it will be equally applicable to some future software.

Disclaimer 2 - As far as I personally am aware, this is the first example of Open Source Wireless Mesh Networking software. There have been numerous research projects conducted with public research funds on Wireless Mesh Networking that have resulted in publicly disclosed source code (along with theses, reports, etc.)... but as far as I'm aware, such efforts have not resulted in publicly available source code that could easily be modified and run on commodity wireless hardware such as 802.11b devices.

That said...

Earlier this year, I had a long discussion with a principal of MeshNetworks, the vendor whose proprietary Wireless Mesh Network technology has the most potential of a number of "products real soon now" Wireless Mesh Network vendors (there are many). I told him then that MeshNetworks had tremendous potential, but also huge liabilities in being proprietary in an industry that is all about standards. Their approach, adding a mesh networking layer alongside 802.11b could work... but that if MeshNetworks didn't get some product out in the world very soon and prove that their technology worked, and was worth waiting for, that a "not as good, but good enough, and free!" open source equivalent would ultimately destroy the market for MeshNetworks products.

I didn't know who would do it, I didn't know when to expect it, but I've been expecting this development for some time, and the fact that it's here is seminal. The reason is that this Wireless Mesh Network software runs on existing, inexpensive 802.11b hardware and inexpensive single board computers. All it will take is one successful Open Source implementation of Wireless Mesh Networking released into the wild, and that will spark any number of similar development efforts and will eventually grow to encompass nearly any wireless data system which is the least bit hackable.

Now, Open Source Wireless Mesh Networking appears to be here. Judging by the comments posted, MeshAP-05 is following the classic disruptive technogy pattern - it's rude, it's crude, it's unattractive, it has bugs, it's not compatible with all conceivable hardware... complaints ad nauseum. Think of all the bad things that were probably said so many years ago about Linus Torvald's little science project to make Minix into a real Operating System... (for those to whom that reference is a bit subtle, it refers to the creator of the Linux Operating System.) But MeshAP-05d appears to be on a rapid improvement cycle: the initial release was 9/26/2002 and substantial updates were posted 10/3/2002... with 3132 downloads of the CD image file. This is likely to be viral, folks; it's gonna spread rapidly because it addresses a long-sought need (mesh / peer-to-peer wireless networking), it leverages off existing facilities and systems (inexpensive, but limited range 802.11b equipment), and it's easily distributed, free and will eventually work well and operate on one's laptop (or PDA) unobtrusively. We will see this implemented in commercial products within 18 months, and perhaps double that for full standardization on a par with other 802.11 standards.

Commentary

Clearwire's selection of IPWireless is the latest in a string of encouraging developments for the BWIA industry, and one of the few bright spots in the Telecom industry. BWIA service providers and vendors are winning new business because BWIA systems can meet emerging requirements for new broadband services quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively (novel concepts for the Telecom industry of late). What's remarkable about these eight vendors listed above is that they're all relatively new companies, all offer systems purpose-built for providing cost-effective, easy-to-deploy Broadband Internet Access. Many offer integral voice capability and portability / mobility. For most of these companies, these are announcements are some of their first major placements. This is in addition to very well-established BWIA companies such as Alvarion, AirSpan Networks, Proxim (merged with Western Multiplex and others), and Aperto Networks. Taken together, there is a very encouraging pattern emerging - that Broadband Wireless Internet Access technology, products, and vendors are poised to provide Broadband Internet Access services for the next surge of growth.
